Do you like the color red? What about tomato red? What about tomato red when it’s combined with mint green? When it comes to choosing colors to design your website, you may find that your color preferences can be difficult to nail down. Even tougher is coming up with a color palette that you love today and again tomorrow.
While your tastes may change over time, choosing colors in the context of a palette scheme can be a little easier than coming up with one color and trying to create others to match. Try using one of your favorite photographs and using an image tool like Photoshop (not free), Paint.net (free to download), or Pixlr (free on the web) to extract colors and create a palette that speaks to you. Still having trouble? Why not spend a few minutes (or for some, hours – it’s easy to get sucked in!) on a site like Colour Lovers or Design Seeds? Users create and upload millions of color palettes to help inspire you on your next project. As a designer, one of the first questions I’m going to ask when you request a site design is what color scheme you want me to use. Giving me a starting point like this helps me jump right into the fun stuff – making your design uniquely you.
